ABOUT HERBILOUS
The gift of herbs,
with context.
Herbilous is an Australian educational herb guide designed to make plant identity, traditional use, preparation methods and safety information easier to explore and understand.
Why Herbilous exists
Herbal information is everywhere, but it is often presented without enough context. A traditional use may be mistaken for proven clinical effectiveness; a laboratory result may be repeated as though it were a human trial; and two plants sharing a common name may be treated as interchangeable when they are not.
Herbilous brings these details together in one practical guide. It helps readers identify the correct plant and medicinal part, understand commonly described herbal actions, compare preparations and notice cautions that deserve closer attention.
Created by Karen Keelan
Herbilous was founded and developed by Karen Keelan on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Karen holds a Diploma of Health Science, completed three years of a four-year naturopathy degree, is currently undertaking degree studies in Western Herbal Medicine, and has more than 30 years of personal study and practical experience using herbs and essential oils.
Karen is also the creator of the Australian Tinctures, Herbs and Natural Healing Facebook community, where members learn, exchange knowledge and share their interest in herbal preparations and natural health.
Her interest is also deeply personal. Her experiences following breast cancer and while managing type 2 diabetes and arrhythmia strengthened her commitment to nutrition, lifestyle, herbal preparation and responsible complementary self-care alongside medical oversight. Karen regards herbs and essential oils as an important part of her own return to better health, and her doctor has been pleased with her progress.
This is Karen’s personal experience, not evidence that herbs cure cancer, diabetes or arrhythmia. It is one reason Herbilous is careful to distinguish personal experience and traditional knowledge from clinical evidence.
The guide grew from decades of reading, making, learning and answering everyday questions about herbs. It continues to expand as profiles are checked, clarified and updated.
How information is presented
Herbilous aims to distinguish between:
- recognised or documented traditional use;
- practitioner monographs and established herbal texts;
- laboratory, animal and pharmacological research;
- human clinical evidence; and
- important limits, interactions and safety uncertainties.
Where the evidence belongs to a particular extract, dose, formula or route of use, it should not automatically be transferred to homemade tea or tincture.
Education, not diagnosis
Herbilous is not a medical clinic and does not diagnose, prescribe or promise that an herb will prevent or treat disease. The guided finder and comparison tools organise educational information; they do not produce personalised treatment recommendations.
Anyone taking medicines, managing a health condition, preparing for surgery, pregnant or breastfeeding should seek individual advice from an appropriately qualified clinician or pharmacist.
An evolving reference
Herbal knowledge is not static. Plant names change, product preparations differ and new evidence can strengthen, weaken or complicate earlier conclusions. Herbilous is therefore treated as a living reference rather than a finished book.
